Remember Expanded Folders

J

John Schneider

I'm still trying to find a way to have Outlook 2003 remember which folders
are expanded (in folders view) when I close Outlook. I can expand and
collapse various folders while working during the day, but when I go back
into Outlook the next day, they are the same as before.

From what I can tell, the expanded/collapsed list of folders is the same way
it was the day that I upgraded from Outlook 2000 to 2003. Since it
remembers how the folders looked at that time, this information MUST be
stored somewhere! Why won't it remember how they looked when I close
Outlook?

ANY ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know how to save the folders view?

Thanks for the response, but that doesn't work. I did this to a few folders
and closed Outlook. When I open Outlook again, the folders were just as
before.

I've played around with this and come to the conclusion that the "as last
viewed" applies to the grouping of the messages, NOT the folders. I'm still
trying to figure out a way to have Outlook remember which folders in my
Personal Folders were collapsed or expanded when Outlook is closed. Its a
real pain in the rear to have to manually expand groups of folders each time
I start Outlook.

There just HAS to be a way to do this!

Correct, the view settings are for messages, not the folder list. Outlook
doesn't remember anything about the design - in some versions it will expand
them if a new message is moved to the folder but that is the extent of it.

Diane,

Thanks for the information. Looks like I've been pursuing something that
just doesn't exist.

I think there are a lot of us looking for an answer to this, and if there's
no way to do this I'd be pretty surprised and a little disappointed.

Just to reiterate the problem: When I open Outlook 2003 there are a bunch of
different folders under the All Mail Folders pane. One of these (it's not my
primary account) is my hotmail account folder. Every time I open Outlook 2003
(even if it's running in the system tray) I have to click on the + sign to
view the folder contents. even if I left the folder maximized when I exited
the program, I still have to open the folder again. I want to be able to see
the folder contents without clicking the + sign everytime I start Outlook.

It seems very simple, and I'm still convinced that there's a solution
somewhere somehow.

Nope. Can't be changed.

Yet another reason I'm such a fan and have been using Mozilla for so many
years now. It remembers which folders were expanded when you close it.
Unfortunately, we have to use Outlook for business, although with the
release of Thunderbird, that requirement is under serious reconsideration.

Just migrated from the old style (97-2002) PST file to the new 2003 style.
Now when I start Outlook up, everything expands just the way it was the last
time I closed it. Looks like the limitation is only for the old style PST
files.

This IS possible. I have two computers using Outlook 2003 accessing the SAME
Exchange account. One remembers the last way I left the Inbox folder (usually
expanded), the other doesn't. There's got to be a registry setting messed up
somewhere.

Hello

I'm searching for a solution for the same problem. Now, i think with
Settings in Outlook it is still not possible. But what's about macros?

Is it possible to do this with a macro?

Thanks

I had the same problem, Inexplicably, after aboutafter a month, it suddenly
started remembering the folders I had left expanded. I have no idea why it
suddenly started working.

if somebody is interrested, i found out how i can expand the list of folders
the way i want.

Example:
I have an account named "my account" (IMAP). This account is listed in the
navigation pane under the personal folders and is collapsed.

Now, i've created a macro in "ThisOutlookSession" with the following entries:

Private Sub Application_Startup()
Set myFolder1 = Session.Folders("my account")
Set myFolder2 = myFolder1.Folders("Inbox")
Set Application.ActiveExplorer.CurrentFolder = myFolder2
End Sub

This three lines of code you can copy and paste as often as you want to open
several entries in the navigation pane.

This works on my computer (Outlook 2003)

If somebody has a question, poste it here.

best regards

phinel
