Reloading XP PRO

I have slicked the hard drive (40 Gig) and formated it to NTFS. I am
reinstalling XP PRO. Everything goes OK untill installing componets and I
get repeated messages that say " Windows could not load the installer for
Disk Drive. contact your hardware vendor." This is for the CD Drive and
Battery as well. I continue with the installation and at the end during
SETUP it says "cannot install this hardware" "SYSTEM" "error while
installing device" " Data is invalid". What the heck happened? It worked
fine before I slicked the drive.

"slicked" the drive must mean "formatted", eh?

First off - it sounds like you are using an actual Windows XP CD. Okay.

Did you boot with said CD and use it to delete the partitions, create new
one(s) and then format it (quick or full) NTFS?

Do you have some special controller card for your hard drive that would
require a driver? (Google for F6 XP Installation.)

Did you bother to make an inventory of your hardware and download the latest
hardware drivers from the hardware manufacturer web pages before you started
to do the reinstall? (that would have been the easiest time - since
everything worked - the identification of the hardware would have been as
easy as looking at device manager, etc.)

You need the latest drivers for your hardware - just because it worked
before doesn't mean it worked right off the Windows XP CD. In general - it
should work - maybe not 100% - but enough to get it going. Sometimes you do
need a controller card driver and you need to press F6 at the beginning of
the install to specify a driver on a floppy diskette - but I am unsure if
this is the case because you have told us nothing about your hardware.
