reloading windows xp

I purchased my Dell with Windows XP Pro SP1 loaded in it. I downloaded SP2
when it became available. I am having some issues and would like to reload
Windows from the disk provided by Dell but I am getting a warning that I am
attempting to load an earlier version of Windows and will lose files and
settings. What files and settings will I lose if I go ahead with older
version? Do I need to find a current Windows disk to reload? Any assistance
will be appreciated.

Hi msdeedrick,

Although I don't know specifically what files and settings you will lose, if
you reinstall using the older version you *may* end up with mismatched files
that will cause you more problems.

Since I believe that the Dell Windows XP install CD is similar (if not
identical) to the MS retail version, you should be able to create a
slipstreamed install CD that contains SP2 (assuming that your system has a
CD burner in order to create the install CD). Have a look at the
instructions here for slipstreaming:

A few months ago, I ran into the same problem as msdeedrick while trying to
"find" files that somehow went missing from WMP. Bottom line--I became
frustrated and tired of following numerous links and FQA's, so I took the
risk and uninstalled SP2. Now, my computer is running fine and I really
don't want to undertake all the "slipstreaming", etc., mentioned all over
this NG, for fear I will end up with another error code. Is there some
reason(s) I should reinstall SP2 at all?? AU keeps trying to "update" me,
and I'm not sure I want to.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

it might be easier to resolve the "issues" than to reinstall windows!!

post your "issues".

if there is nothing on HDD that is worth saving, go ahead and use dell
recovery cd.
it will be reset to factory settings. All personal files will be erased.

The Dell XP install CD is not like the factory image Recovery CDs (or
partitions) that other computer OEMs use, one can actually perform an
in-place upgrade (repair install) with the Dell CD without having it erase
all personal files.
