ALCHEM

Hello!
To anyone who could help me.
I think that the Windows XP on my personnal computer in defective. Therefore
I would like to reload it.
The actual Windows XP has ben instal by a computer seller. I own the disk
with the regular licence.
To repaired Windows XP I tried to reload it by using this disk. A message
occured saying that it cannot do it because the version in the computer is
higher than the one in the disk. I guess that the compute seller has loaded
Windows XP via Internet from Microsoft.
I could not find a Microsoft site to download the same version, or any
version. All what I found are update version but I could not reloaded the
whole Windows.
Many thanks to whom may help me.

no the reason it won't work, is the original install cd doesn't contain the
level of service packs that your pc now contains. so you need to make a
slipstream cd that contains the latest service packs, but be aware of the
latest Microsoft ploy.

I recently purchased a copy of XP pro, in the manual that come with it, it
says Ms is using a new install key for the service pack this cd contains, and
no lower level of pro cd install key will work, so if you upgrade your cd to
the latest level of service packs and do a reinstall, your old install key
will not be accepted, isn't that nice of MS?

They are forcing you you to either buy a new license or upgrade to Vista. or
keep a slipstream cd service pack below the current level.

I can give the exact wording of what the book says later tonight or tomorrow

You might want to do a little research before you jump to a false conclusion.
The XP Pro OEM package you bought came with SP2c. The notice you refer to means
that you can't use your CD key with a CD that doesn't have that specific service
pack, SP2c. It won't work with an XP Gold, XP SP1, XP SP2, or XP SP2b CD. That's
all it means.

XP SP2c was released to address a shortage of CD keys. Take a look at this
article for more info.

Windows XP Service Pack 2c
http://oem.microsoft.com/downloads/public/seo/winxp_sp2c.htm

Anyone with a CD key released with an XP Gold or XP SP1 CD can slipstream SP2
into the installation files, create a new installation CD and have no problem
installing XP as long as they do so under the terms of the EULA. This action by
Microsoft in no way forces user to purchase a new license or upgrade to Vista.

First off, why do you think your XP installation is "defective"? Reinstalling
the XP should be done as a last resort.

That said, the reason you're getting that error message is twofold. First, your
XP installation CD is at a lower service pack level than your current
installation. If you've had this computer for several years then your XP
installation CD probably only contains Service Pack 1. Your computer most likely
has been updated to Service Pack 2. The second reason why you're getting that
message is because you're trying to start the installation while XP is running.
That's going to be a problem.

If you want to wipe out your current installation and install a new copy of XP,
you need to boot your computer from the XP CD. That will allow you to format the
partition where XP resides. How you boot from your XP CD depends on your system.

It's now time for you to do a little research. Start here;

You misunderstood what was written in the documentation that came with
your new Windows XP SP2 CD. I forget the exact words, but there are
explanations about the new SP2 keys somewhere on the Microsoft site. If
I remember correctly they were close to running out of keys (or they
wanted to foil pirates) so they devised a new algorithm for the keys
used on "factory" cds with SP2. What it says is that if you try to use
that new SP2 cd of yours to fix an identical but earlier version or to
reinstall using the key from an earlier version, the earlier key will
not work.

So, if I knew you personally and told you: "Hey, sgopus, the dog ate my
retail XP gold cd and I need to repair/clean install my (earlier)
Windows XP, could I borrow your new SP2 factory cd? I have my product
key, I only need to borrow your cd." And of course, you being a good
friend, you would oblige and lend me your cd. Well, my key won't work
with your new SP2 cd, I would have to borrow a pre SP2 cd. You can
slipstream SP2 to an older XP cd and the old key will still work, its
just that old keys cannot be used with the newer "factory" cds.

This means that your installed OS is at a higher service pack level
than is the WinXP CD you're using. You'll either need to uninstall SP2
(Control Panel, Add/Remove programs) before attempting the upgrade, or
try slipstreaming SP2 into older WinXP installation.

I went looking for more information on the SP2 product key issue and
found out that I had it upside down in my earlier answer, new keys don't
work with older cds, I'm not sure if old keys work with the newer media,
it doesn't say anything about it. The key problem was addressed with a
fix or change that was incorporated in a newer version of Service Pack
2, the new version is SP2c. Here are excerpts from the Microsoft site:

Microsoft has released Service Pack 2c (SP2c) to system builders for the
following versions of Windows XP:

* Microsoft Windows XP Professional
* Microsoft Windows XP Professional N

Due to the longevity and success of Windows XP Professional, it has
become necessary to produce more product keys for system builders in
order to support the continued availability of Windows XP Professional
through the scheduled system builder channel end-of-life (EOL) date of
January 31, 2009.

Service Pack 2c was released in September 2007 to provide system
builders with a new, extended range of product keys that will ship with:

* Windows XP Professional
* Windows XP Professional N

This release does not impact the following versions:

* Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
* Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition
* Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
* Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition

SP2c Features and Requirements
There are no other features or fixes included in this service pack; it
will only allow for the inclusion of additional product keys. When using
SP2c product keys:

* The keys must be used with SP2c media.
* New images must be created to accommodate the new product keys.
* System builders who use imaging will be required to create a new
image from the SP2c release. A hot-fix will not be provided.
