Reloading CD software

I just installed a new DVD-CD RW burner on my Dell Optiplex, and when
I tried installing the Nero software is apparently deleted my old Nero
software AND it nuked the Microsoft drivers. The system "sees" the
drive (it is in the hardware list under My Computers), but it does not
show up in the list of drives under My Computer and also has a yellow
exclamation mark by the device. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling
the device. It cannot install the driver software. So, now in order to
repair the driver/system I need to load the CD. Catch 22. There seems
to be NO place where you can download and install the Microsoft
drivers for the drive (its a Sony and it is my understanding they use
the Microsoft drivers).

Does anyone know a way around this Catch 22? Why doesn't Microsoft
have a place where their drivers can be downloaded and installed,
especially the crucial ones like the CD??!!

Microsoft doesn't do driver development the hardware manufacturers do. You
can get the latest drivers for your dell from their web site. Just enter in
your service tag number here.

Dell did not provide the drive. I bought it and installed it myself.
It is a Sony and not listed on their site. I also cannot find the
software on Sony's site. On one forum someone said that Sony uses the
Microsoft generic driver. (?)

You might ask them here.

Well, I finally got it to work after about 10 hours of searching for
drivers, downloading firmware and software upgrades, changing jumpers,
swapping drivers in and out, and dinking with the BIOS.

I tried so many things I can't reconstruct exactly the chain of
events, but for others reading, here's what I think happened. When I
tried to install the new Nero software, it apparently somehow nuked my
registry (only I didn't know that at the time). At first the
diagnostic was a 39, I think, which means it can find the hardware but
can't load the driver. After trying and downloading many things, that
diagnostic turned to be 41 which means "can load the driver but can't
find the hardware." Upon looking at a number of forums, I found that
this error means the registry is corrupted. I did a prescribed
registry edit that deleted the "upper and lower filters" for the CD
drive (they were indeed corrupted with the wrong hardware designation
in them), I was able to make make it work.

Some things to know for others:

-Sony uses the Microsoft CD drivers that I assume are in firmware, so
there IS no other driver to download.

- Dell likes for you to use the "cable select" option on the jumpers.
Anything else and you are asking for trouble. I even tried the right
master-slave combination and I got a confused BIOS reply.

- If you have a problem go to Google groups with the error number, and
there will likely be help there.

Without the registry edit, I would seriously be looking at a C drive
format and total reinstall, a move that would set me back about 1 1/2
months to reload everything, reinstall all updates, and get back even
close to where I am now.
