Test if a CD burner works

Not sure if there is a better group to post this, but here goes.

I found a Sony CD burner and am trying to find out if it works
properly.
I switched it out with my slightly newer CD burner.

Windows installed a driver for it and it shows files on a CD in
windows explorer.

My Nero software that came with my other CD burner won't work with it.

Do I look up the model number and search for software for it?
I would like to know that it will made CDs.

Thanks.

As a test, get some files to burn to CD; can be anything, pictures,
documents, etc. Put a blank CD in the drive. Highlight the files, then right
click. Select "Send to" and select the Sony CD burner. The CD burning wizard
will open. Follow the prompts and burn the disk. Eject the disk and read the
disk in another computer. If the disk reads fine, you have a problem with
Nero.

I tried it and it said Windows doesn't support the R/RW format.

Is there a fix for it?

The CD Writer works fine when using CDBurnerXP, but I would like to
see if Windows itself can burn CDs.

Thanks,

Nero probably won't work with this drive. Mainly because the OP said
that Nero came bundled with his other burner, so it is probably coded
to that drive and won't work with another brand/type. Try a free burn
app here http://www.imgburn.com/ and see iffn that works for ya.

P.S. Sorry for the piggy back on your post, Mark.

The Windows native burning utility only supports burning to CDR's. I don't
think it can burn to CD-RW's; and it definitely can't burn to DVD.

No, this is by design.

If CDBurnerXP works and Nero doesn't, you have a problem with Nero.
Obviously the drive itself is working.

Is this something new? I have one Nero Express disk that came with a burner
I bought I don't remember when; and it works with all my burners of differing
makes. Maybe Nero needs to be repair installed when the drive is changed.

I found a freeware program that is 6.7 Mb installed.
I uninstalled the 67 Mb Nero.

I had a Lite-On burner that came with Nero 5, I think, and I could not
install 5 on the next Lite-On that I put into another machine. It
(Nero) gave me a warning notice saying that their software was not
bundled for this drive, or something to that effect.

I also had a Pioneer burner that came with Nero 7. I could not install
from that CD onto any other drive, either. Same message. These were
the limited, crippled, basic programs bundled with the drives. I
contacted Lite-On and they told me that the software was *tied* to the
brand and model of the drives it came with. Don't know if it would
work with any other, just those two brands IME.

Now I just use Imgburn on every machine and have no worries at all!

Hmm, never heard of that. My Nero Express is a version of 7 and it doesn't
seem to care where it's installed. You learn something new every day.

Same here. I installed Nero 7 Essentials that came with the PC I bought a
number of years ago. I've changed that CD burner out for a DVD burner (twice
I believe), and added a Lightscribe CD/DVD burner, too, and Nero works with
both, no problem. The only reason I keep Nero installed is for the
Lightscribe label maker. For file burning, I use ImgBurn.
