Third-Party burning software does not depend on the built-in WinXP
function, usually. Just try it out and undo that setting in case of
trouble.

Right click on the drive that is your CD burner

Uncheck Enable CD recording on this drive

This just stops XP from using the built in drag and drop burner, which only
works with CDs BTW.

It has no effect on other software.

Nero does NOT need Windows XP's Built-In CD Burner. If you want to use
Nero, uncheck Enable Recording on this Drive for your drive.

From a NERO readme...

[[Go to your Windows Explorer or My Computer and right click on your
Recorders drive letter, and then go to the "Recorder" Tab and in that window
disable the option for "Enable Recording on this Drive".]]

If you want to use Windows XP's Built-In CD Burner at a later time, you have
to check Enable Recording on this Drive for your drive.

Enable XP's recording wizard

Open My Computer, right click the CD Drive icon and then click Properties.
Click the Recording tab.
Check: Enable CD recording on this drive
Click: Apply
Click: OK

Enable CD recording on this drive
This setting turns on the built-in CD recording features included with
Windows XP.
Third-party CD/DVD burning programs sometimes disable this setting.
You can only enable CD recording for one device at a time.

Only One CD-R or CD-RW Disk Drive Can Be Used to Create Compact Discs in

Hi Larry,

Nero works better with Windows XP's Built-In CD Burner disabled.

If you want to enable Windows XP's Built-In CD Burner and use it instead of
Nero you can.

Whatever you want to do, it's up to you. You can enable or disable it as
often as you like. The trick is to remember where and how to do it.

Nero should find whatever drive that is recognized as a recordable device, a
drive that can Write/Record/Burn CDs.

You can not Write/Record/Burn CDs with a CD-ROM drive, a CD-ROM drive is
Read Only. A CD-ROM drive can only Play/Read CDs. A CD-R/RW drive will
Read or Write/Record/Burn CDs. CD-R/RW stands for Recordable/ReWritable.

Larry,

You can certainly have have two CD-R/RW drives and no cd-rom.

Why not get a DVD recorder drive? Then you can burn DVDs, which hold more
stuff than CDs. A DVD recorder drive can also Read or Write/Record/Burn CDs
as well as DVDs. DVD recorder drives cost about the same as CD burners.

No matter what you do, you can only Write/Record/Burn CDs or DVDs on one
drive at a time.

You cannot use Windows XP's Built-In CD Burner to burn DVDs. You would also
need a newer version of Nero software to burn DVDs.

If you were to buy the right DVD recorder drive it would probably include
DVD burner software.

Just something to think about. ;-)
