Reload XP Pro over XP Home

Can someone warn me if I'm going to have any loss of files by installing XP
Professional over XP Home?

Also as far as installing it over the top goes, I'm installing it on a
laptop and I've booted from the CD, and I tried "Setup Windows XP on a
partition" but that just warns me that I'll have problems if I install it
over the top. So I'm about to 'Repair' an installation but I don't know if
that's the right way to go about it.

Can anyone give me any insight?

Thanks,

One does not "boot from the CD" when upgrading to Windows XP Pro.
Read the following instructions:

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition and will not affect your
current programs or files if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

I am having trouble upgrading from XP Home Edition to XP Pro Edition. The
setup program loads 100% and starts to write the susyem configuration when an
error occurs "No disc installed or unable to write system configuration
files". I tried reloading the XP Home Edition but it to gives an error now. I
tried to boot in Safe Mode at a DOS prompt but it errors out with "System.Sav
not found". Any ideas??
