I am reinstalling Windows XP and I get to the 3rd or 4th boot disk and get a
message that a file is corrupted. I started from scratch the first time it
happened.

Both times I got an error message, I have to shut down.

When I start the computer up again, I get the following message:

Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event.

What does that mean?

"themal" = "temperature", excessively warm, hot, see toasty. One or more
components in your computer is overheating and the computer is shutting down
to protect your data. This is known as a Bad Thing and you need to remedy
it. You need to identify the overheating component and fix the problem. It
can be improperly applied thermal paste (or none) when replacing a cpu,
failure of a cooling fan, or simply the need for more fans or even a
thermally advantaged computer case. If you are overclocking you have gone
too far.

Thank you for your information. I will look into that. I hope I didn't ignore
it for too long.
The next question is that, providing that I didn't do harm by retrying,
could there be other problems associated with the heat up?

Your computer might stop running entirely.

Thank you so much for your advice. Thankfully, the problem was layers and
layers of dust inside the unit. I was able to get it cleaned out and am
having no problems whatsoever.
