reinstalling xp

I had a problem with my operating system. it gave an error
where it said that my system file was corrupt, it would
not boot,

I tried reinstalling xp but it created another operating
system.

How do I go about reformatting my drive and installing xp
from scratch. It does not offer this when I boot from the
cd.

Any help would be wonderful. Thank you for your time.
