Reinstalling XP in place without losing data?

Hello.

i m running win xp pro at the moment on HD1. most of my program files are in HD2.
i'm trying to figure out if its a better idea to reinstall win xp in place or to do a clean install (if its possible?) but i'm afraid of what might happen to the programs in HD2.

i mean, if the registry gets wiped, how will that affect my programs?
i need to reinstall xp badly, and i want to make sure its as clean as possible, but i'm afraid of data loss.

any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks for your time.

With a Clean Installation all applications will need to be
reinstalled:

With a Repair Installation, settings and data, including applications
should be safe:
