Reinstalling XP Home

Yesterday I tried to reinstall windows XP home, I put in my recovery disc and
went through the process until I got a question that asked me if I wanted to
upgrade Windows XP or do something else( I don't remember that option now but
seemed to not be what I wanted to do even less)so I clicked on the upgrade.
After about 10 minutes of gathering info from the computer it started to
prepare the installation. I then get a screen come up that says "files
needed" it is looking for a file "asms" which I don't have on that disc and
don't know where to get it from. The only way to leave that screen is to
click on cancel. Then I get a Fatal Error message that only takes you to the
set up log file and it says error code 426. The only way off that screen is
to click on close and it shuts down the computer and reboots it. As it
restarts a blue screen comes up that says "setup is being restarted".... then
after about 10 seconds it goes straight to the installation page that is
preparing for installation and the process starts again with the file missing
and the fatal error message and rebooting. I can't get out of this cycle. I
am able to click the delete button on start up that gets me to a screen but
I can't find anything there to help end this programm. IU can also click F%
during startup and get to those functions but none of them has helped.
Anybody have any idea how to get this program to stop running would be
greatly appreciated.
