Reinstalliing XP Home In Repair Mode

Bercaue of a fatal error I am reinstalling xp in the 'R' mode, I don't want
to reformat because of the data files. I boot the system from the cd and it
loads the files for the installation, when it's starts the install I get a
'Files Needed' msg and it's looking for 'asms' on the boot cd. It requests
the path where the file is located. The problem is it doesn't recognize the
cd drive, the path is 'I386/amsm'.
Any suggestions?

the 'asms' error indicates a damaged CD or a 'bad burn' of the setup files.

The "reinstall" CD may be a Recovery CD, which will erase the hard
drive and re-install XP at the time you first got it. You may need to
take it into a local PC reapir center and ask them to save you data
and re-install XP.

Thanks,
Taking it to the local repair shop hopefully is a last resort. One other bit
of info,
The 'copy files from' window has this msg 'GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386'
which doesn't make sense to me.
