Reinstalling Vista Ultimate

Rev Martin Hazel

I have a PC with Vista Ultimate installed, and I keep getting massive
glitches on downloads, MSN Live and other programs, so the thought of
re-installing got me thinking, If I reinstall I will end up having to phone
MS to get an updated activation, so is there any way of repairing a full
install without loosing all my data?

Next time...

Upon completion of installation AND activation, make a full backup.
When you restore the backup (which is faster than installing),
it's already activated,
and has all your preferences already setup.
Note: Won't work if you restore to the wrong machine.

If you do this occasionally, then when problems arise with your computer,
you can always step back to a configuration that you trust without having to
re-install "everything."
For upgraders (me), you won't have to do the double or triple install
anymore.

Hi,

Any reinstall will require a new activation, and in general you will need to
phone in activations subsequent to the original, even on the same hardware.
Before doing a reinstall (and incidentally, you cannot do a repair
installation as with previous Windows versions, only a new install), you
would be wise to backup any data you wish to save to removable media or
other hard drive.

By the by, problems such as you describe can frequently be ascribed to
Internet Security Suite programs such as those sold by Symantec and McAfee.
Before going to the extreme of starting over, you may want to examine these
as a possible cause.
