Reinstallation of Windows XP

My system has recently been extremely slow to start up windows and frequently latches up. I've tried the troubleshooting program in "Help & Support" but it didn't change things. Neither did restoring to an earlier date (the restore was inadvertanly shut off at one point so no pre-problem restore points exist). Can I re-install Windows XP some how without loosing files to get a fresh start? How about copying files to disk, reformatting the hard drive & reinstalling? Is that discouraged / dangerous??? Thanks!

I would choose saving data, reformatting and starting fresh. Sometimes that is the best way. It is perfectly safe to do, assuming you back up all critica
data first. It can be a bit time-consuming, but it will give you that "new computer smell". You could first try searching out and removing ad-ware, spyware, trojans, etc
Many times users have so much of that junk running, it slows the system to a crawl

I had the exact same problem. Windows was starting up really slow, Explorer was always crashing, the start button would not work, etc. I tried reinstalling Windows three times, and each time it did not good. I eventually just backed up my critical files and started over from scratch. Bad news...

That worked... for a day. Now my system is exhibiting some of the same symptoms. I am now convinuced than an industrious pornographer is responsible. Every few seconds Explorer starts loading up porno sights... even if I am not using Explorer. I am trying to get support... but with Explorer buggy it is hard.
