Boot a Linux Live-CD like "knoppix" (google) and burn away all your
needed files/data.

Then do a fresh install of Windows (Or stay with Linux). For your SATA
drivers to work in Windows setup (will NOT be detected!), you have to
create a floppy disk with the drivers for your SATA-Controller. There
should be a how-to on the CD oder manual of your Motherboard on how to
create that disk. Then, when booting from Windows CD, press F6 when
prompted. There should be a notice on the bottom of the screen when the
screen gets blue after CD-Boot.

When done with Windows Setup, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
install ALL updates (several reboots and page-revisits will be
required). Then install rest of needed drivers. Then install programs.
Then copy back your burned data.

Define "would not boot" and "nothing happens"

-- system "boot from cd/dvd hit key"
hit key and message" checking setup" then blank screen and no activity on
hard drive Left it in this state for about 1 hour and still nothing. CTR,
ALT, DEL, restarts system. same results. Can not restore XP

I would check all BIOS settings....since it is a new mobo you might need to
set it to "see" the SATA drives and set them into the boot order.

We assume that you are using a Retail XP CD and not a "recovery" CD from a
Computer Supplier which would not be bootable.

Why would an OEM supplied recovery CD not be bootable? I haven't seen one
that isn't. It may not be useable, but it would definitely boot from it.
