I am thinking of reinstall xp. The version I have is
update. How do I convince it to install to a newly
formatted disk? Won't it think that it is a new install
and not an upgrade?

Thanks

Set your computer's BIOS to boot to CD, insert your Windows XP upgrade CD,
and let your computer bootup. The Windows XP installation will begin.

Since you have an upgrade version of XP, you will be asked to insert the CD
of your qualifying Windows version. Mke sure you have it handy.

If you do a clean install with the upgrade version, during the install you
will be asked to put in your qualifying media (ie: win98 cd, etc..) for the
install to continue.

Not correct at all. Upgrade version cds CAN do a clean install. You just put
in your qualifying media cd when asked for it. In fact all versions of xp
cds can do clean installs. OEM versions cannot do upgrade installs.

The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous
qualifying version's installation CD (with an OEM restore CD, see
below), not to have it installed. When setup doesn't find a
previous qualifying version installed, it will prompt you to
insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous
version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite
normally and quite legitimately.

You can also do a clean install if you have an OEM restore CD of
a previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it
*can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP
upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.
