Windows says that my Product ID is not valid, what can I do to make the
installer realize that it is a legal copy of XP, with the original ID?

You have to supply a valid CD Key in order to have a valid license. If you
cannot do this because you lost it, cannot type it correctly, cannot read
the CD Key because it is smudged - you have essentially lost functionality
of the product and will need to obtain a new CD key. The CD and data
there-in is not the MOST important part of the equation for you as a
consumer - it is the CD Key that came with it. Make sure you are not
accidentally typing in a "8" instead of "B", a "5 instead of a "S", etc..
