I have a laptop with XP Pro on it. It has a virus and lots of
problems, so I want to format and reinstall the OS. I don't have a
recovery disk, but I do have the serial number of the Windows installed
on that computer.

Is there any way I can reinstall XP without paying $200 for a retail
copy of Windows?

Does it have a recovery partition? If so, just follow the instructions in
the fine manual. This act usually returns the computer to the "as
delivered" state.

Otherwise, you may be able to get a replacement CD from the maker (in that
case of an OEM machine) or from Microsoft (in all other cases).

Failing those steps, you must be the cluelessness tax of whatever the retail
version costs because you allowed the computer to get so infected.
