I have found an easy to follow instruction for
a clean installation

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

I am wondering if I can follow those instructions
since my Windows XP CD w/SP2 is "upgrade" version?

Thank you,
Charles

Early in the installation process, you will be asked to provide
what's called "qualifying media" such as a Windows 98
installation CD. Once the CD is validated, you put your XP
upgrade CD back in the drive and continue with the clean
installation.

See step 9 from this installation guide. Click on the image in
the left hand column to see the screen that's displayed during
installation.

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the WinXP
Upgrade CD, provided you have the true installation CD for the earlier OS.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab files.
