I tried to reinstall windows xp pro tonight only to get the error that it was
a different version. I beleive that we downloaded the sp2 several months
back. Is there any way to do it without losing infomation????

Yes, by creating a slipstreamed install cd containing the latest sp

You should have data backups anyway

First off, you should be starting the reinstall by booting from
the XP installation CD. The error message you cite appears if
you try to start the installation from within Windows.

Next, as has already been pointed out, you can create an
installation CD that includes SP2 by creating a "slipstreamed"
CD.

Create a Slip Stream version of Windows XP
