Windows XP Pro ShutDown Problems

My machine (Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop) seems to function okay except it will
not shutdown properly. When I tell it to shutdown or restart, the screen
gets to the point where it says "shutting down" but it stays there.

I was thinking that I could reinstall XP Pro to make sure all of the Windows
files are installed but I do not want to affect my other programs and the
registry.

Can someone tell me how to reinstall Windows XP Pro (I have my installation
CD) without affecting the registry and the existing program and data files?

Thanks in advance

Make sure that you have a valid installation disk and not a Dell
recovery CD.

Sound like you might have a problem with the PC is not respond correct
with the ACPI power scheme. Check in the Power Option "applet" in
Control Panel. Also, you might need to install / update the chipset
drivers. Check on Dell's web site or try with Intel's or AMD's web
site. Look for "chipset" drivers.

Everything appears to be fine with the Power settings in the applet and my
drivers are up to date. This problem only started a few days ago, before
that everything was fine. It does appear if I am patient and wait between 5
and 10 minutes (no exageration) sometimes the machine will shutdown properly
on its own.

I do have a true XP Pro install disk with a license number. If I want to
refresh the Windows files (without affecting the regisrty and all the
programs installed), how would I do that?

Thanks again.

The updated drivers were obtained from the Dell Support. I have since done a
Windows repair but still have the same problem. I am trying to narrow down
the problem and it appears that there is a service that is interferring since
I am playing around with services in msconfig. If anyone has suggestion
would appreciate them.
