Reinstall Win XP pro from an upgrade edition after reformating a d

My son's Dell 8100 has a trojan virus Symantec reports can't be killed that
is located in the System32 folder. If tried to manually delete it but that
doesn't work either.

I'm going to reformat the drive and reinstall Win XP-Pro but his copy is an
upgrade edition. Is there anything I can do, short of installing Win-98, that
will tell the upgrade CD that a previous copy of Win is present?
