I am trying to reinstall Win XP because of viruses and other problems. I got
a "new" HD (bought a used one off of a friend) and it is now the "D" drive.

I backed all of my files onto the D drive, I am now in the middle of a
complete reinstall of Win XP on the C drive.

The screen now say "Setup will install Windows XP on partition

D: Partition1 (New Volume) [NTFS]"

So now my questions:

1) Does this mean that Setup is tryign to install onto D?
2) Will choosing the "Format the partition" option erase all of my files on
the D drive?
3) What shodul I do?

Thanks!

Try disconnecting the D drive and then install Windows as it will only
have one drive left to install to.

Your new HD was assigned the letter "D"?
How do you have the hard drives configured- did you change
anything in BIOS?

The drive you want to install XP onto, should be set as master
on the primary IDE channel, normally your CD/DVD will be set
as slave on the same channel.
The new hard drive should be on the second IDE channel.
If it is only device on second channel it can be set as CS (cable select)
if the second IDE channel already had a second DVD installed,
that would have been set as CS, but adding a second device you
should re-set the second DVD drive as Master and the new HD
as Slave on the second IDE channel.
The drive letter assignment would then be:
Primary IDE master hard drive: C
Primary IDE slave DVD/CD: D
Secondary IDE master 2nd DVD (If exists) E
Secondary IDE slave 2nd hard drive: F
(If the second IDE channel has no 2nd DVD/CD then set new
HD as CS or Master and it will be assigned the letter E)

In BIOS set the Boot order (depending on BIOS maybe named
Boot sequence)
Power on and hit key: Del or F2 (Trial and error depending on BIOS)
Once BIOS screen loads you will have to navigate using keyboard
and locate option "Boot order". (Maybe a sub menu under "Advanced")
Set boot order as follows:
Drive A (floppy) : 1 (If a floppy drive is
installed)
Primary IDE slave (DVD): 2 (make "!" if no floppy on your PC)
Primary IDE master (C): 3 (make "2" if no floppy on your PC)

Do NOT include devices on secondary IDE channel in Boot order.

Save settings, exit BIOS and reboot.

Insert XP installation disk
Reboot
Your PC will reboot from the XP disk.
Or you may receive on-screen: "Press any key to boot from CD"
Then "Welcome to set up" screen will appear
Hit Enter key to start XP set up
Follow the instructions on-screen to select and format a partition -
select Primary IDE C drive, format as NTFS
Once format is complete XP will be installed to that partition - "C"
