I had to reinstall my system this morning because of hijacked webpages,
virus, etc. I have my system up and am trying to reinstall Norton A-V 2002
and Microsoft programs that came with my system.

1. When I try to install Norton it comes back with this message: "There was
a problem trying to register your Live update. This will be unavailable for
this product. Installation ended early because of an error." It will not
reinstall.

2. I can not find any software for any applications besides these: AOL 7.0,
Conexant Picture studio, shockwave, MSN, Musicmatch (installed), and Norton
which won't install.

Any ideas/help.

Thanks

Have you contacted a Norton tech rep about this problem? They have free
tech support at: 1-800-441-7234

Live update is a utility, which is basically different from Norton AV.
It's used for all the Symantec/Norton Products to keep them updated.
Your subscription most likely ran out.
Norton AV was probably installed on your system, but it's obviously a bit out of date.
If you had purchased a subscription for Live Update, you can probably email them, and
explain the situation... as they probably have a record of you.

Did you reinstall from disks that came with your computer?
Or from an XP disc itself?

It is from the DELL Computer Applications Disk. I don't acutally have a
Norton AV disk.

I haven't contacted Norton at this point since I don't actually have the
Norton disk. I have emailed dell to try to get some help.

Did you ever purchase a subscription from Norton, for updates?
If not, I suspect the initial subscription that comes with your new computer, has
lapsed... if your computer is more than a year old.

As for all the other programs, they too, are dated. So you'll probably have to download
newer versions.
In the meantime, since you're not really protected when on the web...I'd suggest you
download SpywareBlaster - - a free program that will block a lot of spyware/malware...
and SpywareGuard - - a free program that gives *real-time* protection from spyware.

They'll help protect you, until you get the antivirus issue resolved... and after.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I did purchase subscription for updates and had kept it up to date until I
reinstalled my system.

I did find my other disks for Microsoft word and such.

So my only problem is Norton. I am going to try to uninstall and reinstall
Windows again to see if that helps. Do you think that might help?

If it's paid up to date, just give Norton a call or email.
When you have a paid subscrition, a certain file is placed on your computer.
When you reinstalled XP, it was obliterated... thus, the program thinks you have no
subscription...
Reinstalling Norton won't make a difference... contacting them will ;)
