I need to reinstall XP from the original CD. How does Microsoft handle such
a situation so that it doesn't appeat that someone is installing a bootleg
copy?

If have the "Original" CD and the Key Code for that CD is valid,
you should not have a problem activating Windows over the Internet.

If you are using the same computer and same hard disk, there should be no
problem at all with the activation of XP even a dozen times (though I've
never tried that many).

Internet activations are normally stored for 120 days. OEM versions
activations might need to be done over a voice phone line, which is
mostly a free 800 call (in North American areas.)
