regwiz.exe crash everytime I try to use it to register

Hey all,

Altho I know I don't really need to register WinXP (brand new copy), I tend
to do so for some companies.. but whenever I try to use the regwiz /r, I get
the first 2 screens, then when I hit 'next' the program crashes showing me
this window (title)

RegWizExe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience.

Now since this is a brand new installation, I was hoping NOT face issues
(who knows what other problems might lay in wait.. since one program is
crashing, who knows how many others might as well).

Anyhow, thanks in advance for the help and replies..

checked, but not related to my issue.. the KB article relates to Office use
of regwiz for Win2000 and below.. and the fix they suggest (using regedit)
pertain to subkeys that don't have equivalents Windows XP program.

You don't need to register XP; you do need to activate. If the computer
is from an OEM (Dell, Sony, HP, etc.) it has already been activated. If
you are trying to activate a retail version of XP that you installed
yourself and are having a problem, see the information below from MVP
Rick Rogers:

Click start/run, type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll" (without the quotes) and
click "ok". Then do the same for "regsvr32 licdll.dll". You should get
a successful message for both and it should resolve the error message.
If not, then try these steps:

Start the computer in Safe mode by hitting F8 at startup. Click
start/run, type regedit and click ok. Expand the branches in the left
pane by clicking the plus (+) signs to reach these keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers

Click on the folder representing each key and delete them one at a time.
You may want to create a backup before doing so by clicking file/export
and saving a copy to the desktop. If there is a problem after deleting,
you can put the key back by double-clicking it. If there is no problem,
you can delete the key later. When finished, restart the system
normally after closing the registry editor.

Note: If you used reset5 to crack the Windows XP installation
previously, the above steps will not work.

Windows Product Activation (WPA) - http://www.aumha.org/a/wpa.htm

If the above is not applicable to you, please post back with a better
description of the computer, the operating system you have installed,
and what you are trying to do (activate, register, etc.).

Unless you wanted to let me know that registration is only available once..
which seems to be the case in here (registraton, not activation, which I did
my phone).

thx for the reply

Hey Malke,

Thx for the reply..

Aye, the Activation was already done by phone without a problem (automated
voice thingy).. couldn't do it while installing since it couldn't detect a
network connection for some reason (I have a broadband connection). But as
long as it is activated, I'm fine (I tried the genuine advantage and it works
as it should)

As mentionned previously, I like to register some programs that I purchase
and this is one of them. If it can't be done (after reading previously
mentionned KB <see above>, then it's no big deal.. I can see that there are
a lot of posts mentionning that registration is really really NOT required
and most seem to *not* do it at all.

Appreciate the detailed help you provided but I'll wait your confirmation
that it is for *activation*, not *registration* which I'm trying to do. If
it can't be done for some reason, I'm fine with it since I believe I still
have access to my 2 free support calls/emails (at least I think it works with
the activation of WinXP, not its registration).

Thx again

OK, I was referring to registration/activation for the XP operating
system, not for particular programs. I have no idea what those programs
require. You should check with tech support on the programs with which
you're having difficulty.

Oh, forgot to provide a better system description, here comes

AMD Barton 2500+
ATI RADEON 9700 PRO
120 gig, 60 gig HDs
1gig mem
mouse/keyboard
CDRW
external USB DVD-RAM drive

Installation is brand new (reformatted and reinstalled newly purchased WinXP
Pro/SP2 included)

Could NOT activate or register after first boot (it couldn't find a network
connection, so I skipped the registration step after trying it once) and
called the number provided to ACTIVATE it without any problems (my copie is
currently activated.. just not registered).

Again, my worry is that since one piece of software isn't working properly
on a brand new install, makes you wonder if there isn't another potential
issue burried somewhere. I must admit that I tried Office, IE, Express,
Anti-virus/Zolealarm, some demos/games etc and all seems fine except for the
regwiz /r issue so perhaps I should just let it go. Would be nice to *know*
what the issue is and find a fix for it, but hey, if that's the only problem
I'm facing, I'm still a happy owner :)

I must admit to being confused between this post and your previous one.
In this post, it seems you are referring to registration of the XP
operating system. In your previous post, it seems you are referring to
registration of programs.

Just to clarify:

1. Registration of the operating system is optional and unnecessary.
You've already activated, so nothing more needs to be done.

2. Registration of third-party software may be mandatory; it depends on
the program. Contact the program's tech support for help with their
registration.

Hi,

Yes, I'm always referring to the Windows XP Pro Operating system in all my
posts (sorry for the confusion). When I mentionned that I like to register
certain programs, I meant Windows XP as the program to register.

So to recap.. and only talking about WinXP here, I already activated it, and
as you said, altho I cannot register it (regwiz won't work), it is not
required at all. So I won't do so. What's nagging me tho is *why* isn't
regwiz working at all on a brand new install of Windows XP. (which I'm trying
to use to register.. again, NOT to activate).

But, to keep this thread short, I'll forego the registration since it is not
required and everything else works flawlessly (Office, Visual Studio, and
everything else).

Thanks again for all your replies.. much appreciated :)
