Registry problem with java

H

Home Computer

I wanted to upgrade my version of java runtime module. When I de-installed
it left a registry key behind called 'Javasoft' with no sub keys underneath
it.

For whatever reason this key cannot be deleted, renamed.

I exported the registry removed the key and re-imported the registry but it
keeps the javasoft key.

I tried to use a registry key clean up program (not that I think they are
necessary) but it deleted all other invalid keys but not the javasoft

I tried to restore the entire system back to a time when I knew everything
is ok. The restore just responds indicating that no changes were made to my
system.

I ensured that the privalages and own of the key was set to the
administrator profile and did the same things above with no effect.

I tried to re-install the operating system but my disk is an older release
of XP pro and it wants to to a fresh copy. I'm not really excited about
formatting my hard drive for obvious reasons.

Is there any tool, trick, act of congress that will allow me to remove this
key? Is there a utility that will run the windows setup program without
formating the hard drive?

Thanks for listening

You failed to tell us why you need to delete and what happens when you try?
If it's an install problem I'd ask them here.
