Registry Error

When my laptop boots into windows xp i get the blue
screen of death and it says registry_error 0x50. Then I
went to the recovery console to recover the registry but
when I select the c drive/windows partition, I get the
registry_error again. Any ideas how to recover the
registry on an ntfs file system without using the
recovery console. Also, safe mode crashes with same error.
