Registry cleaning...

which is the best registry cleaner to use with winxp home?
I wish to eradicate all traces of uninstalled software, broken links, and
general rubbish from my registry.

I already have CCleaner installed, and Registry Mechanic, but not sure
whether these will conflict with each other, or even do the job properly.

Any info would be good

Registry cleaners aren't for everyone. To see if they're for you, take my easy quiz:

1. Have you purchased any of Don Lapre's 'Making Money Fast' courses?
2. Are you a distributor for Sea Silver?
3. If the price was right, would you be interested in buying the Brooklyn Bridge?

If you answered Yes to any of the above, congratulations! You are qualified to use a registry cleaner. Any one will do.

If you answered No to all the above, bigger congratulations! You know how to separate hype and myth from truth. No registry cleaners for you.

Most people would say to avoid a registry cleaner, at all costs. I would
say to download ERunt a free registry backup program and then backup
registry and make a restore point. After that is done use Registry
Mechanic or download the trial of JV16 and run that. I never used
Registry mechanic, but I have gotten good results with JV16. But with
all these programs check the entries they say to remove.

P.S. Remember the registry is the heart of the OS so be careful.

Thanks for the info, I've never heard of jv16, so i'll give it look.
Of course, it goes without saying, that one should back up the registry
before doing any work on it, I know from experiance how annoying it can be
when you destroy the registry :-/

Let me know how Registry Mechanic works, I was interested in trying it out.

Do a search for:
jv16pt_setup1.3.0.195.exe

It is the last free version of jv. RegSeeker is also free. Both are
excellent programs. All registry cleaners will automatically back up the
registry before deleting. I have used Registry Mechanic. It is an
excellent program, but I just prefer Registry Medic.

Of course, ERUNT is an absolute necessity for XP as it will make a COMPLETE
backup of the registry every day.

Registry Mechanic is good, after spending a day or two looking at various
bits of software my choice would be that or a purchase of JV16

What specific problem are you experiencing that you *know* beyond
all reasonable doubt will be fixed by using a registry "cleaner?" If
you do have a problem that is rooted in the registry, it would be far
better to simply edit (after backing up, of course) only the specific
key(s) and/or value(s) that are causing the problem. Why use a shotgun
when a scalpel will do the job? Additionally, the manually changing of
one or two registry entries is far less likely to have the dire
consequences of allowing an automated product to make multiple changes
simultaneously.

The registry contains all of the operating system's "knowledge" of
the computer's hardware devices, installed software, the location of the
device drivers, and the computer's configuration. A misstep in the
registry can have severe consequences. One should not even turning
loose a poorly understood automated "cleaner," unless he is fully
confident that he knows *exactly* what is going to happen as a result of
each and every change. Having seen the results of inexperienced people
using automated registry "cleaners," I can only advise all but the most
experienced computer technicians (and/or hobbyists) to avoid them all.
Experience has shown me that such tools simply are not safe in the hands
of the inexperienced user.

Further, no one has ever demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that the
use of an automated registry "cleaner," particularly by an untrained,
inexperienced computer user, does any real good. There's certainly been
no empirical evidence offered to demonstrate that the use of such
products to "clean" WinXP's registry improves a computer's performance
or stability.

The only thing needed to safely maintain your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, then you also lack the knowledge and
experience to safely configure and use any automated registry "cleaner,"
no matter how safe they claim to be.
