Spysweeper,Registry edit, CCleaner

Newbie. Had trouble with Spysweeper "freezing" when I tried to view the
"sessions log" report which is part of their software. I contacted
Spysweeper, they sent me new downloads 2 or 3 times, same problem.
Spysweeper then suggested I run disk scan, defrag and then run a registry
cleaner utility. I did all three. I used CCleaner "issues" option to "clean"
the registry. I did use the backup file option which is part of CCleaner. I
then came to this forum via searching to learn more about registry edits.
After reading very good posts (Shenan Stanley, Yogi) warning about cleaning
registries I got scared and figured I might have screwed something up by
trying to clean the registry (at the recommendation of Spysweeper) so less
than 48 hours later I pasted the saved CCleaner file back into the registry.
Everything seems to run fine both before and after pasting the file back into
the regstry. My question is how can I learn more about the report CCleaner
produces listing the items to be deleted so I can decided what I want to
delete or save? Thanks for your patience. And do you thing I messed up?

Well, for one, no you did not screw up. In fact you did pretty good. Why do
i say this?? Well because you chose the right software to try and "clean" the
registry. Although, you may want to give a thought to the reason i mentioned
for not using any such softwares. The reason is that you do not have enough
knowledge about the kind of information that exists in the registry. Moreover
you do not know which entries or, more specifically, "keys" are being removed
from the registry. If you know that you will be in a better position to judge
whether to let the software remove those keys or not.

Don't be afraid to try anything. If you are and do not try you will never
know of the results of that action. Worst case: you may have to reinstall
windows xp. All in all you will always learn alot from this. (This advice is
applicable to you only if you are interested in "knowing" this machine better)

If you want to learn more about the registry you will find plenty of guides
as well as websites and forums dedicated to just this. Google it out!! (I
meant try it out) :)
