Registry cleaners for W2?

T

Tavish Muldoon

Is there a need for registry cleaners with Windows 2000 or is it a
waste of money, or even bad for a system.

I have noticed my system becoming slower - did virus scans, spyware
checks, degragged, check it out in safe mode.

I was thinking of those registry cleaners - think that will help?

If so - what are some good ones?

Opinions and experiences please!

Thanks,

Tmuld.

Having seen the results of inexperienced people using automated
registry "cleaners," I can only advise to you to avoid them all.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, you also lack the knowledge and experience
to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner, no matter
how safe they claim to be.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner.

I never did trust any of those utilities...even Norton's.

I do use a registry optimizer once in awhile. It's freeware. Get it here:

I also use the backup utility (which also comes with the optimizer) setup on a
daily schedule. This copies the registry to a separate folder under %SystemRoot%
each day of the week. It can be restored using the Recovery Console. Probably an
overkill, but you never know.

Does W2K have the "scanreg /fix" and "scanreg /opt" undocumented services
available on WIN98? These tidy up the registry.

No, Win2K doesn't have anything like it, along with a lack of a comparable
backup utility were the main reasons behind the development of ERUNT.

I believe that MS didn't think that this type of utility was necessary for Win2K
and they may be right since it doesn't appear to suffer from the same problems
experienced by the Win9x registries..

BTW, the ScanReg features you mentioned are well documented in this article:
