Registry cleaner and spyware?

I've got to make some decisions and install appropriate spyware
and perhaps a registry cleaner on my new computer. I used McAfee
on the old computer but I am not sure this is the best choice.
I've never used a registry cleaner, but my new computer's
motherboard setup installed UniblueTrial Version on this
computer. I've used it to scan for errors, but the trial version
won't do make any registry changes. I'm hoping someone can give
me some good advise on these questions.

I never understood the need for a registry cleaner. By the time the
registry gets so screwed that you need to clean it, you've probably upgraded
the system hardware far enough to require a clean install of the OS anyway.

Use avast! antivirus, ad-aware SE and spybot search and destroy. Also visit
www.sysinfo.org and use msconfig to disable all startup items that aren't
absolutely necessary. This should be almost all of them, btw. -Dave

As well as using the free programs Dave recommended, CCleaner does a
good job of cleaning both the Internet cache folder and the registry.
I've been using it for quite a while now (many months) and it's worked
quite well. Never a problem. It gives the option of backing up any
registry changes if you wish as well. free: http://www.ccleaner.com/

One other free program that blocks malware is Spyware Blaster: free and
effective. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ Don't forget to check for
updates frequently.
