I want to back-up my registry but on system tools there is no backup tab
(symantec / microsoft suggest there should be one.
Any ideas?

Also - Norton virus scan tells me I have netski (surprising as I
automatically update and have firewall etc.) but the netski removal tool
tells me I don't. Any ideas here?

Hi,

The backup utility is not installed by default in a WinXP Home system, and
some system manufacturers do not include it at all. You may want to see if
this helps:

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302894

Otherwise, you will need to find a different backup solution.

Where does Norton's indicate the infection is? If in a "system volume
information" folder, then all that you have is a copy of the bug in one of
the restore points. This is harmless and will eventually be purged as newer
points replace the old ones. It can be manually removed it you wish, but is
not necessary. Post back for instructions is you want to do this.

Many tools that will backup registry can be found on the `net. Do a
google search.

Probably in system volume information (system restore point). Turn off
system restore and scan again. Use Help to find out how.

By default is not installed in XP home edition. You can load it from your CD
or if you don't have a CD (OEM) click start help and support and type in
'backup'.

Hi Rick

I looked where netski was and it was with mcafee spam filter.
Deleted it there and all gone!
Thanks for advice.

Rather annoyed with myself though as undid system restore - losing carefully
placed points, ah well, at least I back up regularly.

Click on Start.... Run...type regedit hit enter key. In Regedit
click on File.... Export. Now export it somewhere to save your backup. If
you ever need to reinstall the backup you do the same thing but choose
Import. Go to your saved registry and import it. I always do that before
I screw around with the Registry so that I can always recover if the change
screws things up.

DriveImage and Ghost will include your registry in their backup images.
GoBack will recover everything to a previous time, including the Registry.

As has been pointed out before, this is not a good way to back up your
registry. You can read why here.

A much more reliable way is with the free ERUNT.

Hi NottNick - Get Erunt here for all NT-based computers including XP:
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/index.htm I've set it up to
take a scheduled backup each night at 12:01AM on a weekly round-robin basis,
and a Monthly on the 1st of each month. See here for how to set that up:
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/erunt.txt, and for some
useful information about this subject

This program is one of the best things around - saved my butt on many
occasions, and will also run very nicely from a DOS prompt (in case you've
done something that won't let you boot any more and need to revert to a
previous Registry) IF you're FAT32 OR have a DOS startup disk with NTFS
write drivers in an NTFS system. (There is also a way using the Recovery
Console to get back to being "bootable" even without separate DOS write NTFS
drivers, after which you can do a normal restore.) (BTW, it also includes a
Registry defragger program). Free, and very, very highly recommended.

FYI, quoting from the above document:

Note: The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) to make
a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the whole
registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive is
saved), nor can the exported file be used later to replace the current
registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an absolute mess of
old and new registry keys.

They may be thinking of backing up by using the registry editor and its
File - Export. This is NOT a good way to back up the whole registry

The registry is in fact backed up each day in the automatic system
restore point and use system restore (at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore)
as the normal way of restoring it.

A good auxiliary program for registry backup is ERUNT

This is *not* a good method. First the backups are text mode, largely
in Unicode and are enormous. Second the import is a merge, and does not
remove any additions that may have been made since the export. And
third when you want to use it it may not be practicable. System restore
is the normal method, or use ERUNT
