Registration of windows products

I've had Windows XP for quite some time but today was requested to register
it before it would allow the product to proceed? Seem a bit fishy?
 
Windows XP and XPPro require ACTIVATION. You are given 14
days to accomplish this. REGISTRATION is not required.
