Regedit has been disabled

Trying to fix the Task Manager disabled issue and found that Regedit also
says it has been disabled by administrator. Tried to run XP repair and didn't
fix it. Any thoughts.

Also, can I reload XP from the CD without wiping out all of my data?

Thanks

Ran the script and it said that regedit tools are enabled but when I run
regedit from the command line it still says it is disabled. Is there another
step necessary to turn on regedit?

Thanks

Did you reboot???

Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakuirest.htm

Or...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
213. Disable or Enable Registry Editing Tools

Click on Enable
for disableregistrytoolsundo.reg

Right click disableregistrytoolsundo.reg and Select Merge.
Does the VBS script have more high priority that registry restrictions?

No. But if Registry Editing has been disabled in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTool
you cannot use regedit.exe to change the setting.

If a user tries to start a registry editor while the value of this entry is
1, a message appears explaining that a policy prevents the action.

If XP Pro, Group Policy (gpedit.msc)..
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\
Disable registry editing tools

[[Disables the Windows registry editors, Regedit.exe and Regedt32.exe.

If this setting is enabled and the user tries to start a registry editor, a
message appears explaining that a setting prevents the action.

To prevent users from using other administrative tools, use the "Run only
allowed Windows applications" setting. ]]

Regedt32.exe is a small program that just runs Regedit.exe.

You Have to use a script or a reg.exe.

I tired the methods in both articles, rebooting after each attempt and still
get the eror mesg tat regedit has been disabled by the adminstrator. Trying
to launch the group policy editor (GPEDIT.MSC) a screen flashes quickly and
closes.

So I'm still stuck, I appreciate your suggestions.

First, get rid of whatever malware you have on your machine.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Update whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

Only by doing a repair installation, which you say you've already done.

That was my orignal thougth also, I ran scans when I first noticed the
problem. I updated everything and reran the scans today. Norton for Virus and
Webroot and Spybot for spyware. Nothing showed up other then the usual
cookies.

I rebooted and retired the fixes all with the same negative result.

Mark,

regedit.exe is the Registry Editor.

What happens if you type: regedit.exe in the Start | Run box?

Or type: %windir%\regedit.exe ?

Some trojans\viruses\worms add a file called regedit.com, typing regedit
with no extension causes regedit.com to try to run instead of regedit.exe.

Regedt32.exe is a small program that runs Regedit.exe.

What happens if you type: regedt32.exe in the Start | Run box?

Or type: %windir%\system32\regedt32.exe ?

Trying to run GPEDIT.MSC and having it flash quickly and then close is a
symptom of a trojan\virus\worm.

You might want to have a look at this.

Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/ToolsQuit.htm

Even if you had a trojan\virus\worm and got rid of it/them, there may still
be some files on your machine that you do not want.

hello,

I just started to have the same problem today, can't use regedit (disabled by admin), can't use task manager (same), can config msconfig (has to be admin, which I am).

I've been working in safe mode since.
I've also tried the copies and regedit32 from the previous posts, same disabled message.

And I also lost my shut down link and run command on the start menu, norton cannot start and some of my start up programs don't start anymore, might be some more but I haven't found out yet.
All I know is it seems to be from trojan horse dropper.generic.RSM

Any more ideas of what I (we) can do??

thanks,
Nixon
