"regedit" fails on launch

In the "RUN" box, I type "regedit" and the window pops up for a
split second and vanishes. I need to get in the registry because
of a couple of viruses. Anyway to fix the launch failure of regedit,
or is there another way to get into the registry?

This is how I solved the same problem. I went to Symantec
site <http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?
productid=ssr&langid=ie&venid=sym> ran the virus check. I
then deleted all files that their program reported as
possible viruses. I was able then to run "regedit." Hope
