Hello Experts,

Does Microsoft offer a version of RegClean.exe for XP. I
used an old version for Win98 and it worked good. If it
is offered can you tell me where to get it? Thanks

RegClean isn't from Microsoft. It's freeware from Finnland. And yes, you
are looking for jv16pt.exe

There is no RegClean.Exe for XP.

You said "it worked good"!
In fact it didn't do very much, the program was designed to cleanup the
Registry after (Visual Basic) programmers had done a trial install of
their homemade program before trying another installation.

Below is what MS said about RegClean at the time:
<QUOTE>
What RegClean Does
------------------

RegClean analyzes Windows Registry keys that are stored in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
in the Windows Registry.
It finds keys that contain erroneous values, and after recording those
entries in an Undo.reg file, it removes them from the Windows Registry.

What RegClean Does Not Do
-------------------------

RegClean does not fix every known problem with the registry.
It does not fix a "corrupt" registry; it is limited to fixing problems
with normal Windows
Registry entries located in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

It is very possible that RegClean will not correct a problem that you
have encountered.
RegClean will leave any entries in the registry that it does not
understand or that could possibly be correct.

Greetings --

Having seen the results of inexperienced people using automated
registry "cleaners," I can only advise to you to avoid them all.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, you also lack the knowledge and experience
to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner, no matter
how safe they claim to be.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner.

Thank you Eric for the clarification. Since RegClean is
not available for XP (and not very useful) ... what do you
recommend to clean the registry? I use Norton Windoctor
but think there must be something better. What about the
RegCleaner that you referenced? .... thanks

I recommend Regcleaner 4.3
it is a 2001 prog but I have been using it since then and it has never
done me wrong
then new version which is bundled with other tools is not freeware

search google for regcleaner 4.3 and you will eventually get a link
that won't take you to the authors home page
they will have this older version on their site

I was a beginner and found out the hard way that not all cleaners will
keep what you really need

this program has never done me wrong in 3 years
but that is my system and my Hardware

if you do feel the need to clean
you must create a restore point before you clean each time

in the event that something messes up you may(notice i did not say
'will') be able to boot into last known good config mode or safe mode
and be able to restore

If you like to clean house I suggest sticking to disk clean up
and Spybot/ad-aware
and uninstalling unused programs and when you uninstall them
double check to see if the acutally directory has been deleted
(sometimes remnants are left)

Get a hardware firewall run the XP ICF and use the add/remove programs to
install and uninstall your sofware.
If you take the time to keep track of what when and how you install software
you will not need a reg cleaner,
however there is a command cleaner in windows xp - check out MS web site for
details.
