I have a new cable connection. It's on 24/7, though we turn the computer off
at night. We have Norton Internet Security and the Windows firewall running
when the computer it on. My question is whether the computer is vulnerable
when it is off, since the modem is always on.

Hi,

Since DSL modems are always on 24 hours round the clock,
your computer is not vulnerable to hackers if it is
switched off. You can be safe.

Unless "Wake on Lan" is enabled in the Bios.

I understand that a DSL connection has to be established by dialing in, but
a cable connection is really "always on."

Not always. DSL using PPPoE must be dialed. This changes for anyone using
a router. If you have a router it's always on. Most router's have
firewalls built in to block all incoming traffic that you dont want. (i.e.
hackers)

I would play safe and disconnect the cable from the computer, either at it
or somewhere along the cable, like at a junction box if cable is shared.

There are two types of DSL connections. One is the one you
describe, but it's the less common type. Most (mine for example)
are always on. I never need to dial in, and couldn't even I
wanted to.
