regarding copying from hard drive to CDRW

Ann

I was copying some files from my hard drive to my CDRW
and while I was copying it said:

confirm Streamloss
The file "thumbs" has extra information attached to it
that ight be lost if you continue copying. The contents
of the file will not be affected. Informationthat might
be lost includes:
:encryptable:$DATA

This is the first time something like this came up while
I was copying. What does that mean?

The hidden thumbs.db file only has meaning on the local Windows system.
Anyone viewing the copied pictures on the CD will see the pictures with
whatever software and tools their system offers. You can just ignore that
warning or when copying pictures in the future, deselect that file and don't
include it in the transfer.

Thank you for answering me. How do I deselect this file
when I can't see it in the files I'm copying? You
mentioned it was hidden, so how do I make it so I can see
it and not copy it? This never happened to me before when
copying. Today was the 1st time. Did I do something to
make this happen?

Thanks, Ann

You have an NTFS file system on the hard disk, which can record extra
'metadata' about files, and there is some for Thumbs.db (which is where
the system keeps a cache of thumbnail images for Thumbnail view).
There is nowhere in a CD file system to store this information - hence
the warning. Carry on, no harm will result

(note though - *don't* try copying files that have themselves been
encrypted - chances would be good that you would never be able to
recover the contents)

Thanks for your reply. I don't understand why this came
up because all I did was copy my jpg photos and html
documents that I created and put in a folder. I just
wanted to copy this folder into my CDRW which I do every
day when I update the photos and html documents. This is
the first time this "type" came up. Now when I copy to my
CDRW it usually comes up, so how do I get it to stop
saying that? Why did it only happen yesterday and never
before when I always copy the contents of my files and
save to a CDRW?

Thanks,
Ann

To show the thumbs.db file, select Folder Options> View. Make the selection
to show all files. Now when you look in Explorer, any folder containing
images will also show the thumbs.db file. When you "select all" to copy
images from a folder to a CD, that file gets selected too. Before starting the
copy process, locate it in the highlighted group. Press Ctrl and click once on
it. It will become "de-selected" and your images will still be selected
(highlighted).

Why did this start happening? Not sure. You may have had the caching of
thumbnails turned off before - there would be no thumbs.db file with this
settings. If that setting somehow was turned on, then the files are created
when you access a folder with image files for the first time. After that, the
file is updated on subsequent visits to that folder.

Again, if you prefer not to change your view settings and want to keep
doing things the way you're accustomed to doing them, that's fine. It is safe
to ignore the warning about that file in the situation that you've described.

At some point *someone* has taken a thumbnail view of the folder, and
caused the Thumbs.db file to be created. It will then hang around
against a future occasion. It is a hidden file - you would need to have
Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide Protected
mode ones to see and delete it
