reg files will not import

I know this is not a big problem as such, but when I double click a reg file
it will not import, the file opens in notepad. I have tried right clicking
the file but the same thing happens.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how I could sort it out.

Go to Folder Options in the control panel and select the File Types tab.
Find "REG" extension and highlight, click the Change button and select the
Registry Editor or browse to select "%windir%/regedit.exe".

Can you right click it and choose Merge?

Some years ago I wrote a REG file to set it exactly as you describe and some
PC builders and servicers are still applying it.

You installed something that does this. Many morons force this setting on to you.

Use Folder Options - File Types to fix. Don't use the Change button. Click Restore if there is a Restore button (and that is likely all you need do). Then Click Advanced and do it properly. Note Restore/Advanced is the same button.

FFS, if it's not bad enough to be a spammer and a troll, do you have to
be an illiterate one as well? How many more times are you going to show
yourself up today?

It is not right on the ball. It is wrong. I know the reg file now merges. But the default verb is still Edit. Many programs and parts of windows have no idea of the Open As infrastructure. This supercedes File Associations and is new (introduced with Win ME).

Sorry william

Why are you sorry? I respect you remarks.

Isn't the default verb for Registration files set to merge on a clean
install for Win XP? The registration file probably should be set to Edit on
clean install of Win XP then people wouldn't just go clicking on these types
of files and answering yes without knowing the consequences of the merged
file. But then some people would find it difficult to use a context menu to
select the action they require.
