Red x's instead of images

I also get the red x's often instead of images. I've
called Microsoft, Dell and SBC and they all say it's the
other guy. Best I can do is reinstall Microsoft Internet
explorer....any other ideas?

Laurie et al ...

here's a post from the same issue -- an issue that seems
to plague a lot of IE users. You can try these ideas, but
my feeling and experience is that this RED X problem is
intermittent, so it is unlikely caused by Zone Alarm et
al, as the configurations for firewall programs would make
it do it always or not at all. Since it only happens -- to
me at least -- about 33% of the time, I don't think it's a
firewall problem.

Q56,
Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet
Explorer

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the
desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking
access to the desired
site.
Symtom: Page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server or
DNS Error

In the event you can not access a site or missing graphics
and
you believe it may be due to an entry in the HOSTS file.

You can use a simple batch file to rename the HOSTS
file "on-the-fly".

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required"
Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

Just thought I'd add something to this...

I'm going to check the registry stuff...but at one of my
customers, a particular page (one among many), when the
page opens, it has all red X's instead of the pictures.
I check the encoding selected from the View menu and it
is set to Western European (ISO). I can then change it
to Western European (Windows) and the page reloads with
all of the pictures. Oh, and Auto Select is also checked.

But if I then close the browser and reopen that page, it
is back to the (ISO) setting and the red X's. Is it the
coding of the page that sets this? I'm not sure I
understand the Encoding part of the browser.

Thanks
jeffrey
