Red X on system tray internet connection monitor

I have a red X on the system tray internet connection monitors. I am
connected and online but the lights do not flash either. I am using a Dell
E521. My Dell E520 with XP does not have this issue and is connected to
same home network.

At times the same thing happens to my network icon. When I first turn the
computer on, the red X is there. But even though the Red X is there, I can
connect to my network and the internet. The network adapter is the on board
D975xbx2. I figure it just takes time for Vista to catch up with what is
happening. Do not know for sure. I did install the latest drivers from intel,
but the same thing. I guesss as long as it works, I will not pay too much
attention to the red X indicator. As for the flashing light in the connection
monitor, the yare off by default. I had to right click on it and select turn
activity monitor on.
