Recycle Bin Weirdness

Question for you guys

My recycle bin does not work for my primary (c:) hard drive, but it does
work for my external firewire drive (f:). When I delete a file from (c:),
they do not go to the recycle bin yet when I delete a file from (f:) they do.

I right-click on the recylce bin and bring up "options"...it shows a window
with 2 tabs ("global" and "F:") but no C: tab. Under "Global" I do have the
same setting chosen for all drives with NO CHECK for the "do not remove files
to recycle bin" option.

It's been this way for a long time, not sure what caused it.

Any ideas?

Run the edit on Kelly's site, line 64, " Replace/Repair the Recycle Bin
in Windows XP" at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm. See
the top of the page for information on running the edit.

Just curious. Do you have a folder called "recycler" in the root of C:?

Yes, that is the recycle bin folder. It is a system folder so it might not
be seen by you unless you have enabled showing of hidden files and folders.
To view hidden folders open My Computer>tools>folder options >view select
the radio button "show hidden files and folders". Does the "recycler" folder
show in the root of F:?

I don't know if you can re-create the folder manually or not but if you have
a recycled folder in the root of F, you might try to copy it and paste it in
the root of C and see if that works for you.

Just a thought

Mark,

I did some more looking and found that (C:) does have a "recycler" folder. I
could not see it even though I had "show hidden files and folders" selected.
I found it by typing c:\recycler in the address window. The (F:) drive does
not have the Recycler folder; any items deleted from (F:) go into c:\recycler.

Still not sure what the issue is, but thanks for the help. Any other ideas?

Oh, just one more thing. Is there more than one icon showing in the recycler
folder in C:? If so examine the properties of each and maybe they will
provide a clue. I had a situation similar to yours once and I was showing
multiple folders within Recycler. I deleted all but one, which it would not
let me delete because it was in use, and that fixed my problem.

Dave, I just found this on Kellys site. It may be what you are looking for:>
"blueguitar322" Files Do Not Show Up in Recycle Bin When Deleted
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;168570

This seems to work for many: Make sure that something is in the Recycle Bin
(delete any file). With the Recycle Bin closed, right click and choose:
Empty Recycle Bin. When the confirm box appears, click ok. Reboot. Now the
Recycle Bin should work correctly.

If the above didn't help:

Files not being listed in the Recycle Bin seem to be related to a corrupt
info2 file. To correct the issue (Fat32):

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD:

Type CD \RECYCLED, and then press ENTER.
Type ATTRIB -r -s -h info2, and then press ENTER.
Type DEL INFO2, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: This deletes the damaged INFO2 file. Windows will recreate this file
as needed, automatically.

You can often restore files even if it is not being listed in the Recycle
Bin by searching (Start/Search) for the files by name, once found rename
them. If the files still cannot be recovered, follow the steps above, then
reboot. They should now be listed.
