recycle bin restores all UNWANTED files

I am using XP. When I delete files to the recycle bin they go away but
return at a later date (approx 24 hours) when comuter started up. This is
infuriating and I would like to know how to stop this happening OR what is
the problem. Thanks

This can happen in a corporate environment when roaming profiles are used.
Was your PC used in an office? If so then have a work with your IT staff.

I suspect malware. See if the problem persists when booting into Safe Mode
instead of Normal Mode. To nail things down, you should create some files
like so: May-30-0930am.txt. Delete them, then watch what happens at the next
reboot.

What files?

It could be that a piece of nastiness collects all your email addresses,
searches your hard drive for credit card data, and searches your MS Word
documents for personal letters, gathers them into a single file to
facilitate transmission to the mother ship. If it does this daily, that's
how the files reappear.

Bottom line: It's not XP that's undeleting these files; some program is
creating them. If you didn't run the program, the program is doing its thing
without your knowledge or permission. This sounds a little dodgy to me.

What happens if you empty the recycle bin before you turn off your
computer? Do the unwanted files still return on a restart?

What software is installed on the computer ? Do you have Norton GoBack ?

I'd have a look through both Task Manager, any Startup items, the
Program folder, looking for any "interesting" software that you've
installed. Perhaps your PC has a program which can return the
disk to a previous state ?

And before removing anything, post back the list of suspicious
stuff you found, and perhaps someone here can advise as to
how difficult or dangerous it is to remove it.

Before making any major changes to your system, make sure
you have a backup copy of any data you need.

TO ALL WHO HELPED. THANK YOU. THE ENTIRE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO THE CONNECTION
OF A SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE THAT BACKED UP MATERIAL. WHEN IT WAS
DELETED FROM FOLDERS THE SEAGATE SAW THE FILES WERE MISSING AND REPLACED
THEM....SO SIMPLE BUT SO SCARY! PAUL SET ME THINKING!! THANKS
