Recycle Bin

I did some cleanup and defragmenting of my hard drive, and now, deleted items
don't go to the recycle bin -- they just go away, and the recycle bin remains
empty. How can I restore it so that deleted files go to recycle?

Right-click on Recycle Bin icon > Properties > Do not move files to the
Recycle Bin... (uncheck).

Thanks. That was it. I had been looking all over in control panel, etc.
Never thought of looking at the properties of the Recycle bin itself.

I am having a similar problem in that the deleted files are not going into my
recycle bin.

However, when I right click on the bin, the box that says "Do not move files
to the Recycle bin, Remove files immediately when deleted" is NOT checked.

What could be the problem?

Do you nave Norton's "protected recycle bin" or whatever it's called
installed and running?

Just a WAG. I seem to recall that all items go there instead.

No, I don't have Norton. I do have Mcafee, so I just went and looked to see
if they have anything similar to what you mentioned and it does not appear so.

My 14-year old just told me I may have to "edit a registry"? Does that
sound familiar to anyone. Son knows just enough to be dangerous, but not
enough to tell me exactly what to do!

Hi Jo...

Only thing I was able to find @microsoft regarding your problem was:

Files Do Not Show Up in Recycle Bin When Deleted
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168570

The workaround discussed involves restoring default permissions in
Properties\ownership tab for the Recycle Bin. (Is a different process in
Windows XP most likely.)

The listed solution is for Win2000 Server, Win2000 Advanced Server, Win 2000
Professional Edition, and both versions of
Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation developer ed, and Std Edition)

I was looking elsewhere online for a similar scenario - with a work around
for XP, which I believe I've found.... 8)

See if this works for you. Report back your results.

UH OH. I tried the first two things where you just type things into the run
box, but neither of them did anything.

Then I started to do this third thing:

Another method: open a explorer window (e.g. My Computer), go to Tools ->
Folder Options -> View, check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck
"hide protected operating system files" (click yes). Go to each fixed drive
(usually C: is the only one) and look for folders named "Recycler" or
"Recycled" in the root directory. Select these folders and press Shift-DEL
(do not delete with DEL or the context menu!). Create a new file or folder
and delete it with DEL. Restore your folder options and empty the recycle
bin.

However, when I did shift-Del, it said something about are you sur you want
to delete program files and so I hit cancel. However, now the recycler
folder is gone! I probably just made things worse!

I too was having that problem, but it seems to work now since I moved the
slider/bin's cache to "expand" the bin's capacity, so there is more room for
the files to go there.

Sorry cannot think offhand where I found it, but maybe someone else could
help.

Well, Katherine, as they say at Staples, "That was easy"

The slider you mentioned is acessed by right clicking the recycle bin icon
and hitting properties. I did what you suggested and it worked!
