Recycle Bin not showing contents (all properties are correctly set)

I have checked the properties for the recycle bin:
the "do not move files to the RB, remove files
immediately when deleted" is NOT checked; and under
folder options:views, "Show hidden files and folders" IS
checked. Still, no deleted files show up in my recycle
bin. They are in there (when I go to empty it, it asks if
I want to delete the 36 files that are in there) but I
cannot see them, no matter what view type I choose. Has
anyone come across this? Can anyone help?

I know of a fix for WIN 95, 98, NT Server & Workstation
4.0 - see ref below (but this doesn't work in XP)???
