Recovery of Damaged XP

J

Johnsmithweb

Power problem caused damage to processor which required
motherboard replacement. User doesn't want hard drive
reformatted but Windows XP logon screen does not appear
and the PC continuously restarts.
I tried KB 310396 (Recovery Console) to replace kernel but
no joy.
Any other things to try before I give the user the bad
news?

Hi,

Follow these steps to do a repair install which should preserve the data,
settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM licenses are not
transferable to a new motherboard), unless your motherboard is
virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS
version, etc.) to the one on which the other WinXP installation was
originally performed, you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also require re-activation, unless you have a Volume
Licensed version of WinXP Pro installed. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Do a repair reinstall after a mobo replacement - Set the BIOS to boot CD
before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take
'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain existing software installations and
most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1
unless the CD includes it;

It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

I'd suggest having the MSoft Security CD around - a free order from
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp

After such a repair, run that (it will install SP1 if needed, and
updates since up to February). Then have a CD containing the following
updates to bring things up to the present

835732 (Sasser)
837009 (OE Cumulative)
832894 (IE Cumulative)
828741 (XP Cumulative)
828028 (ASN 1)
827001 (Jet Engine)
