recovery console

My brothers computer will not boot to Windows XP. I get the screen that says we apologize...blah blah. I am unable to start in safe mode, tried the other options ie, last known config, nothing works just keeps restarting to same page, run an e-diag tools program, said the hard drive is near failure. The computer is an Hp pavilion zt1130, the useless recovery disk that was sent with the comp will only allow you to reformat to factory settings. Unfortunately I guess me brother does not understand the concept of backing up his comp, so he wants me to save all of his data. I called tech support four times, once got a very nice guy, but got nowhere with any of them, all they know how to do is reformat. This may be unconventional but I have a gateway restore disk that will actualy let one reinstall a copy of win xp without losing all info. So I tried to use this on my bro's comp. I was given a message to the effect that the comp does not have enough drive space, or drive is damaged, or drive is not correctly formatted, and that the only thing I can do is reformat and install fresh. Using the recovery console I performed a chkdsk, says errors are found on the drive.
I guess here are my questions now,
I can view the c directory but can not copy to any drive, is there a way to get access to copy to floppy or cd?
If I can get access to either drive how do I convert the windows file name I see ie, (Documents and Settings, Program Files) into acceptable dos filenames?
Sorry this is so long, just trying to think of everything.
To: anyone with any advise
I will be very gratefully, and anxiously awaiting your response.
Thank you in advance.

Did you use any switches with the chkdsk command? Chkdsk /R may fix
things. How much room is on the other drive?
Worst case scenario you may have to cable/jumper the other drive to the
primary master and install XP there. Then recover any data you need.
Or if not NTFS, use a boot disk and manually copy files to the other
drive.
What type of drive is it? Think about downloading the manufacturer's
utilities to run a check.
If you could boot to Safe Mode (or to add the extra functionality after
repair), this article will show you how to enable the RC to copy files.

And a nice review of the RC commands.

I guess I did not mention the comp is a laptop with only 1 hd, if it were a desktop I would set it up as slave and copy info over, but I don't know how I can accomplish this with the hardware I am presented with. I assume it is an Ide hard drive and I do not know the file system.
I am running chkdsk again with /r it is only at 53%
I am not able to boot to safe mode.

Hi Taamtam,

The first thing you need to do is to save as much of your brothers data as possible. The easiest way to do this, is to pull the
drive from the laptop and install it in a desktop as a slave drive. You can buy a cable that goes from a laptop drive to a
standard IDE. The next step is to (if necessary) take ownership of the data and copy it to the desktops hard disk or off to CDRW.

Once you have salvaged the data, I would repartition the drive as one partition and run the manufacturers diagnostics test to
see if the drive is truly dying.

If you have any questions about pulling the drive, feel free to ask.

Ciao . . .
