Hi

If you have upgraded to SP2 and you are using a CD from a previous version
of XP, you will see that error message. To install the Recovery Console in
SP2, you will need to create a slipstreamed SP2 CD.

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:

then follow the directions in the following article to create a slipstreamed
XP CD:

Thanks for your reply. I did not want to got through that again but it looks
like I have to. Dang virus partially trashed the registry and I need the
recovery console to repair it.

Hi

The RC for SP2 can't be installed with an earlier version XP CD - you've
seen the error message if that is attempted. There may be some 'full' XP
SP2 CDs available, but whether there are in your area or not, I don't know.

Found an easier way to do it. I was able to integrate SP2 into a copy of the
old XP CD on the hardrive, then was able to install the console. Worked like
a snap.

You can still use it from your original CD on booting that and using R
option; it does not *have* to be installed
